No. 7 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada, however, suffered a surprise loss to Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 2-6, 6-7 (1-7). Eala thus finds herself unexpectedly in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Another highlight of the round of 16 is the duel between Naomi Osaka and American Ashlyn Krueger. Osaka, the No. 3 seed, was already up 6-3, 3-1 when Krueger was forced to retire. The official reason for the retirement was listed as "ret." – a withdrawal due to lack of confidence. Osaka thus moves into the quarterfinals without having to finish the match.
