Berlin, June 15, 2026

Tennis player Anastasia Potapova retired injured at the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin, exiting in the first round.

The 25-year-old Russian, currently ranked 26th in the WTA rankings, had to be treated during a medical timeout at 1-4 for an issue in the back and neck area on Monday. Shortly after, she decided not to continue, and the match ended 1-6 after 29 minutes.

It is already the second retirement for Potapova within a few days. Most recently, she also had to retire in the second round in 's-Hertogenbosch, though that time due to an illness at 1-6, 0-2.

Second retirement within a few days

The tournament in Berlin is part of the grass-court season preparation for the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon. Potapova had reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros this year and was therefore one of the players drawing attention in the capital.
