A powerful explosion rocked the old town district of Plaka in Athens on Friday morning around 7:30 a.m. According to eyewitness accounts, the blast was heard across the entire city and triggered a large-scale response by emergency services.
Plaka lies at the foot of the Acropolis and is considered one of the most visited districts of the Greek capital. The narrow alleys around the archaeological site are normally heavily frequented, particularly in the early morning hours when restaurants and cafés are making their preparations.
At the time of the detonation, around 7:30 a.m., relatively few people were in the alleys, according to residents' assessments. Many shops and tavernas had not yet opened, which may have limited the number of potential casualties.
