Premier League opener: Nottingham Forest lose with Glasner against Leeds

On the pitch, Nottingham fell behind early and for long stretches of the game found it difficult to settle into their own game.

Despite greater share of possession in midfield, the team failed to create clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities and to put Leeds under pressure.

In personnel terms too, the match offered one or two talking points: names such as Xaver Schlager, Neco Williams as well as the players James Justin and Dan James were among those frequently mentioned.

Leeds United defended their lead in disciplined fashion and safely saw out an away win against a relegation-threatened opponent.

Reactions and outlook for Nottingham

While at Leeds the relief over an optimal start to the season prevailed, Nottingham supporters were left disillusioned after the first competitive defeat under Glasner.

The question of whether Glasner can quickly steer the team onto an upward trajectory has thus moved even more firmly into focus over the coming weeks.

Having lost numerous games in a row in the previous season, Glasner had stressed at his presentation that he wanted to stabilise and reorganise the club.

After the 0:1 in Leeds, much suggests that this task is more extensive than originally assumed, especially with top fixtures against teams such as Liverpool coming up immediately.

In sum, it remains: Nottingham Forest's start to the new Premier League season under the new head coach was anything but according to plan, and the coming matches will show how quickly the team manages to turn things around.
