Karin Prien (CDU) defended planned cuts to advance maintenance payments on Tuesday on NDR, while trade unions and Kinderschutzbund warned of negative consequences for single parents.

Karin Prien sees the state as being excessively obligated by the current advance maintenance law. The German system is a special case in European comparison, she said on Tuesday on NDR: „Anders als in anderen europäischen Staaten gebe es nur in Deutschland ein Unterhaltsvorschussrecht." She also pointed to a joint resolution by the federal and state governments, „Laut Beschluss von Bundesregierung und Bundesländern müsse das geändert werden."

Specifically, Prien plans to pay advance maintenance benefits for children of single parents in the future up to age 16 instead of up to age 18. Most recently, the state spent 3.2 billion euros annually on this, as the report shows: „Zuletzt waren das jährlich 3,2 Milliarden Euro." Prien justified the reform also with regard to the parents obligated to pay maintenance and said: „Dies bedeute eine weitgehende Schonung vor allem für säumige Väter."
