The first name Adelaide refers to Mary Adelaide, the mother of King Charles III. The name also evokes the British-known port city of Adelaide in Australia. Eugenie herself had previously emphasised how important references to the history of the royal house are to her.

The second name Elizabeth honours her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II., who died in September 2022 and whom Eugenie described as a defining figure. The royal was seen at several public appearances alongside her grandmother, including at official commemorative events.

The third name Annina goes back to Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, Brooksbank's grandmother. In this way, the couple draws on a name from the father's own family. Their shared son Ernest George Ronnie, born in May 2023, also bears first names from the immediate family circle.

By explicitly mentioning her great-grandmother, Eugenie responded to speculation about the royal's relationship with other members of the house. In recent months, reporting on Eugenie's father Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and his connections to Jeffrey Epstein had been part of the British press landscape.

According to sources close to the couple, the decision to give birth in Portugal was a deliberate one: Eugenie and Brooksbank have lived partly in the region around the Tagus for several years and had already had their son born there.
