An investigating judge in Naples has imposed provisional professional bans on two doctors at Monaldi Hospital following the death of a two-year-old boy in the wake of a heart transplant. The two are charged with negligent homicide and the alleged falsification of medical records.
The case has been occupying the Italian public for months. In December 2025, the toddler received a donor heart at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. A few weeks later, in February, the boy died. According to the investigators, information was allegedly entered into the medical records that did not correspond to the actual course of events.
The public prosecutor's office is focusing its investigation on the transport of the donor organ from Bolzano to Naples. Based on the current state of the proceedings, there is a suspicion that the cooling container used did not meet the prescribed standards and that the heart was cooled with dry ice instead of regular ice. The investigators assume that the transplanted organ was already damaged before the procedure.
