Investigations against a total of seven doctors

A twelve-month professional ban was imposed on the operating cardiac surgeon, and a seven-month ban on his deputy colleague. Both doctors, together with five other physicians, must answer for negligent homicide in connection with the death of the boy. They are also accused of having falsified the child's medical records.

The case attracted great attention beyond Italy's borders. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had already made contact with the mother in February after the child's death, offered her condolences, and pledged a thorough investigation. Political observers interpret the head of government's intervention as an expression of the emotional impact the case has had on the Italian public.

The transplant itself is considered a high-risk procedure in Italian medical history. The fact that it was precisely the transport of the life-saving organ that became the starting point of a criminal proceeding, in the view of observers, throws a spotlight on the organizational weak points between the hospitals in South Tyrol and Campania. The Office of the Prosecutor General is examining whether there were violations of the cooling and transport regulations for donor organs.

The provisional professional bans are part of the criminal investigations and do not mean that a final verdict has already been reached against the doctors.
