Innsbruck, Austria — April 28, 2026 Brenner Pass highway protest approved for May 30
A demonstration against heavy traffic on the Brenner Pass will force a total closure of the critical transit route for eight hours on May 30, despite warnings of massive disruptions to regional supply chains.
Highway Closure Details
The protest, organized by Karl Mühlsteiger, mayor of Gries am Brenner, has been approved by the Innsbruck district administration after initial resistance. Authorities will implement a full shutdown of the A13 Brenner Autobahn, Brennerstraße (B182), and Ellbögener Straße (L38) from 11:00 to 19:00 local time.
"Solche einschneidenden Maßnahmen hat es in dieser Intensität in Tirol bisher noch nie gegeben," emphasized Bernhard Knapp, head of the state transport department, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the restrictions. Transit trucks over 7.5 tons will face additional prohibitions, with a blanket ban on north-south heavy goods transport across Tyrol starting at 09:00.
The demonstration's approval came despite objections from highway operator Asfinag, which warned of "immense Auswirkungen" on Tyrol, neighboring Austrian states, and international connections to Italy and Germany. Officials confirmed no alternative routes exist for through traffic during the closure, with exemptions only for local "Ziel- oder Quellverkehr."
Legal and Logistical Controversy
The district administration initially sought to block the protest, citing risks to public safety and supply chains. In their original denial, authorities argued the demonstration would cause an "extreme, widespread, prolonged and security-endangering disruption of traffic on a key connection," threatening "öffentliche Sicherheit und Ordnung sowie die Versorgungssicherheit zahlreicher Unbeteiligter."
