A study published in the journal "Nature," led by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), demonstrates that fine particulate matter pollution from Saharan dust has risen over large parts of Europe in recent years and particularly affects Southern Europe.
Research Approach and Causes
Fine particulate matter concentrations from the Sahara have increased over large parts of Europe in recent years. As the international research team writes in the journal "Nature," "Betroffen von der Entwicklung ist einer Studie zufolge vor allem Südeuropa". There, the average desert dust concentration of 5.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air is more than twice as high as in Central and Northern Europe.
