Ralph Siegel in Artificial Coma – Family Provides Update

The Munich-born artist can look back on an extraordinary career. Siegel has written and/or produced more than 2,000 songs. Among them are worldwide hits such as "Fiesta Mexicana," "Griechischer Wein," "Ein bisschen Spaß muss sein," and "Moskau." His best-known work, "Ein bisschen Frieden," brought him and the singer Nicole victory at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in 1982, which at the time was still called the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson. It was Germany's first and, to this day, only ESC victory.

A Career with More Than 2,000 Songs

Despite his age, Siegel had recently been pursuing further plans. On the occasion of his 80th birthday last September, he told the German Press Agency: "Es reizt mich einfach, nochmals mit Deutschland zu starten." His big dream was to take part in the international music competition once again. How seriously he took this ambition was also evident in his business moves: in the spring, it had become known that Siegel had bought a restaurant near Barcelona.

Comeback Plans and a Restaurant in Spain

The news of the artificial coma has abruptly interrupted hopes of such a comeback. The artificial coma, also referred to in medical terms as medically induced sedation, is used to relieve the body and, in particular, the brain of a patient and to enable healing processes. Doctors place the affected person in a state resembling deep sleep and monitor all vital functions. The duration of such treatment depends on the underlying illness and can range from a few days to several weeks.

What Does an Artificial Coma Mean?

The family is meanwhile asking the public for restraint. They are focusing on their father and want to make the most of their time together. Laura, Giulia, and Alana Siegel have so far not commented on possible visits, further medical background, or the exact circumstances that led to the induction of the artificial coma.

In the meantime, the composer is receiving numerous wishes for his recovery from the schlager world. Companions such as Nicole, who made ESC history alongside him with "Ein bisschen Frieden," as well as numerous other artists, expressed their sympathy. Fans also posted messages of recovery and memories of his great hits under the family's Instagram post.

What consequences the current state of health will have for ongoing projects initially remained unclear. Siegel had been active in recent years as a composer, producer, and juror in the German entertainment industry. Most recently, he had repeatedly announced that he wanted to write new songs and dedicate himself to the ESC. When and how these plans can be pursued further now depends on the course of treatment.

On social media, the composer's name was trending again on Tuesday. The captivated gaze of the schlager world is now directed at Munich – and at the coming days, about which the family has expressed confidence.
