SK Rapid Vienna seek to reach the UEFA Conference League qualifiers when they meet SV Ried in the first leg of the Bundesliga playoff on Friday evening.
The first leg kicks off at the BWT X Oberösterreichische Arena in Ried at 19:30, with the return leg scheduled for Monday afternoon in Vienna. The winner over two legs will enter the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
Rapid's path to this playoff was far from planned. The Viennese side finished fifth in the Bundesliga, forced into a playoff after a final-day 0-2 defeat to Sturm Graz. That loss was compounded by a red card for midfielder Yusuf Demir in the 22nd minute, leaving his team a man down for 70 minutes.
It is a bitter outcome for a club that started the campaign with title aspirations. Head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, who took over in January, had been under pressure after a rocky start. "Wir wissen, was auf dem Spiel steht," he said ahead of the first leg. "Wir müssen zeigen, dass wir es verdient haben, europäisch zu spielen."
