Rapid Face Must-Win Playoff Against Ried as European Hopes Hang in the Balance

While there was a 1-0 win in Salzburg and a 4-2 spectacle against eventual champions LASK, inconsistent results—a loss to Sturm, a derby draw, and a meager point from two games against Hartberg—dashed hopes.

Thorup's Tough Start

When asked about the team's chances, Thorup was blunt: "Frag die Buchmacher." The playoff now represents the last chance to salvage something from the season.

For Rapid, missing out on Europe would be a financial blow. Sport director Markus Katzer acknowledged, "Das macht natürlich wirtschaftlich einen riesigen Unterschied aus, ob man sich qualifiziert oder nicht." European participation secures vital revenue that shapes summer transfer activity.

Financial Imperative and Ried's Threat

Katzer, who has overseen finishes of fourth, fourth, fifth, and fifth, is not considering resignation. "Nein, mir macht es weiter richtig Spaß," he said, adding that "einige Transfers in der Pipeline" are in the works regardless of the playoff outcome. However, the club plans no major upheaval.

The opponent, SV Ried, poses a significant challenge. The promoted side won two of their three meetings with Rapid this season, including that 3-0 cup demolition. Ried's strength lies in set pieces. More than half of their goals this season originated from dead-ball situations, with towering defender Havenaar as the primary target. Thorup admitted the danger: "Wenn wir Ried aber anbieten, was sie gerne haben, wird es schwierig."

Senft, meanwhile, is leaving the club after the playoff. He has activated a release clause and will depart for a second-tier side, making this his farewell. He promised his team would fight: "Unsere Mannschaft wird jedes Prozent herauskitzeln, das möglich ist." Yet he conceded they are "schon sehr am Zahnfleisch unterwegs" and spoke of a "kleinen Chance."

For Rapid, redemption is possible. Thorup insisted, "Ich erwarte ein Spiel, in dem wir viel mehr von dem zeigen können, was wir vorhaben, als im ersten Spiel gegen sie." The squad is aware of the stakes and the need to prove themselves.

Rapid are already planning for next season. Danish striker Tonni Adamsen has completed a medical in Vienna, though he has yet to sign. The club cannot afford the kind of expensive signings made in 2025; instead, Thorup wants to adopt a 4-3-3 system with a couple of targeted additions.

Looking Ahead: Transfers and Tactics

The coach stressed simplicity: "Will es einfacher halten und das Tempo diktieren." The philosophy is to impose their rhythm, not adapt to Ried's dogged style.

The return leg on Monday at the Allianz Stadion will decide the tie. A strong first-leg result would put Rapid in a commanding position, but they must first navigate 90 minutes in Upper Austria.

Rapid's lineup should feature goalkeeper Hedl and central defender Raux-Yao, while the midfield will lean on Bolla and others to provide creativity. For Ried, Leitner in goal and the Havenaar-Sollbauer partnership in defense will be key.
