SK Rapid host SV Ried in the second leg of the Bundesliga European Cup play-off on Monday with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg, fighting to preserve their continental ambitions.
Three days after the away loss in Ried, the Viennese club faces a win-or-bust scenario at the Allianz Stadion. Falling short would mark the first time in seven years that Rapid miss out on European competition, a stark contrast after a disappointing domestic season.
The task is not without precedent. Just last year, Rapid overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss against LASK in the same play-off round, storming to a 3-0 home victory with a stoppage-time winner from Ercan Kara. That memory fuels hope among the green-and-white faithful.
Club captain Matthias Seidl refused to use the team’s recent poor run as an excuse. "Wir haben schon einige Niederlagen mitnehmen müssen, schon ein paar Spiele hintereinander verloren, das kann also keine Ausrede für Montag sein," the Salzburg-born midfielder insisted, demanding full focus.
