Red Bull Salzburg defeats Austria Wien 4-1 and turns focus to top clash against Rapid

Vertessen facing departure?

For Austria, the evening proved disappointing. The Vienna side remain in the lower reaches of the table after the defeat and must pick up points in Wednesday's rescheduled fixture against WSG Tirol in order to relinquish the wooden spoon. The coach and those responsible are therefore facing a decisive home match within just a few days.

For Salzburg, attention turns immediately forward after the success. On Wednesday evening at 20:30, Salzburg hosts current league leaders Rapid Wien. It is the standout match of the season so far and is considered the first real benchmark for the hosts' rediscovered strength.

Top match against Rapid on Wednesday

The situation heading into the duel is open. Salzburg has gained confidence through the clear home win, while Rapid arrives as league leaders. Both teams will meet on Wednesday under different circumstances — Salzburg with the momentum of the 4-1, Rapid with the burden of leading the table and the expectations that come with it.

For Austria, meanwhile, it is clear that taking a point against WSG Tirol at 18:30 on Wednesday would be the prerequisite for moving out of the basement of the table. Given the current form curve and Salzburg's clear home win, Austria is likely to head into the encounter under considerable pressure.

Austria under pressure ahead of rescheduled fixture

In Austria's squad, players such as Nikolas Veratschnig and Bartosz Mazurek were mentioned in the reporting, although no further details on their individual performances can be drawn from the available facts. The name Haris Tabakovic, listed as a former "Veilchen" (Austria player), also came up in connection with the previews, pointing to personnel links between the two clubs.

The draw of the rescheduled fixtures has it that, within 48 hours, both Salzburg and Austria must play competitive matches. While Salzburg is likely to view the upcoming task as a top-of-the-table clash, for Austria it is about the sporting foundation of not completely losing touch with mid-table.
