Lower Austria, June 25, 2026

Regional deputy René Zonschits was elected on Thursday the new leader of the SPÖ caucus in the Lower Austria Landtag, succeeding Hannes Weninger in the post.

The election of René Zonschits to head the parliamentary caucus of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs (SPÖ) in the Lower Austria Landtag marks the second internal reshuffle in the party's regional branch in just a few weeks. Only days earlier, Karin Baier had been appointed second regional secretary general, a decision that already pointed to a reorganization of the leadership teams of the Lower Austrian SPÖ.

Zonschits assumes the caucus leadership in place of Hannes Weninger, who had held the position until now. The handover takes place against a backdrop of internal party preparation for the upcoming regional elections, the Landtagswahl 2028, an electoral horizon that the Social Democratic formation is beginning to plan with adjustments to its parliamentary and organizational structures.
