Karin Baier appointed as second SPÖ Lower Austria managing director

Unanimous appointment by the party

Already at the most recent state party conference of the Lower Austrian Social Democrats, Baier appeared in a prominent role. She served as moderator of the various program items and discussion rounds on stage, thereby significantly shaping the course of the event.

The 62-year-old is regarded in SPÖ Lower Austria as an experienced local politician with many years of roots in the region. Her move into the state managing directorate is seen as a signal for a stronger connection of cities and municipalities to the state party.

Division of tasks still open

With the dual leadership of Zwander and Baier, SPÖ Lower Austria intends, according to its own statements, to broaden its party work at the state level. The distribution of tasks between the two managing directors will be concretized in the coming weeks, it was said from the party.

The appointment is part of a series of personnel decisions by SPÖ Lower Austria in recent months. State party chief Hergovich had previously elevated officeholders into extended responsibilities in order to set up the state association for upcoming political contests.

Observers see Baier's appointment also as an expression of the effort to represent the party more visibly in both urban and rural regions of Lower Austria. Schwechat, as one of the larger cities in the Vienna metropolitan area, plays a special role in this strategy.

Reactions from the party

In initial reactions from the party, the decision was welcomed. There was an emphasis on continuity and, at the same time, on new impulses. Baier herself has not yet publicly commented on her new role.

The term as second state managing director begins immediately; a precise date for the formal assumption of office was not given. The duration of the functional period is governed by the statutes of SPÖ Lower Austria.

With the personnel decision, the city of Schwechat does not lose its mayor for the time being: Baier remains in office and will perform the additional function in the state party in parallel with her municipal duties.

Günther Sidl, who appears at comparable occasions as a representative of the federal party, was not directly involved in the appointment, but is regarded as a supporter of stronger networking between city and state politics within the SPÖ.
