Reports: Austrian internationals Schmid and Grillitsch complete medical checks ahead of moves to Frosinone

Background on Schmid's career path

According to a summary of the player's career, Schmid has 61 senior caps for Austria and came on as a halftime substitute during the country's last-16 loss to Spain at the most recent World Cup (0-3). Before his time in Italy, the midfielder had spells in Germany with Bremen and Hoffenheim, in the Netherlands with Ajax Amsterdam, and a half-season loan at Spanish club Real Valladolid.

Bremen's preseason situation

Grillitsch, another Austrian international, has been named throughout the reporting cycle as the second member of the so-called "ÖFB duo" heading to Frosinone. Like Schmid, Grillitsch had previously been based at Werder Bremen, where he has featured in Bundesliga and cup fixtures.

Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune is overseeing a preseason training camp in Harsewinkel in north-west Germany as the club prepares for the new season. The friendly against Lüneburger SK Hansa on 15 August is part of that buildup, with Thioune set to be without several players for the fixture.

The Bremen camp has been affected by injuries and fitness work. According to the reporting, Niklas Stark is sidelined with thigh problems, Keke Topp is in rehabilitation, and Felix Agu is recovering from a calf injury. The absences put pressure on squad depth ahead of the Bundesliga restart.

Italian outlet Sky Sport had previously reported that Frosinone were advancing on deals for both players, with personal terms said to be close to agreement. Tuesday's reported medicals suggest the framework of the moves is now being finalised.

What Frosinone would gain

For Frosinone Calcio, who returned to Serie B after relegation from the top flight, the addition of two internationally experienced midfielders would mark one of the club's higher-profile transfer windows in recent years. Schmid brings top-level experience from the Bundesliga, the Dutch Eredivisie and La Liga, as well as 61 Austria caps.

Grillitsch's profile, similarly rooted in the Bundesliga and Austrian international football, gives the Lazio-based side additional midfield options for the upcoming campaign.

What comes next

On the Bremen side, the departure of the two Austrian internationals would thin a midfield group that Thioune is already managing without Stark, Topp and Agu. The club has not publicly confirmed any agreement with Frosinone.

If the deals are confirmed, both players would join Frosinone on permanent contracts. The Italian transfer window remains open in line with the wider European calendar, and Serie B clubs can register new arrivals through the deadline.

Reporting on Tuesday evening indicated that official confirmation could be expected once paperwork is finalised in Italy. Neither Werder Bremen nor Frosinone Calcio had issued an on-record statement at the time of the latest reports.

The timing of the moves, falling on the same day as a Bremen friendly, illustrates how transfer business and preseason preparation are running in parallel at the Weserstadion club. For the two Austrian players, the next step is the formal announcement of their moves to Serie B.
