Experts from the University of Copenhagen have debunked the yo-yo effect in weight loss and emphasized that repeated attempts to reduce weight do not harm the body.

A myth put to the test

The fear of the yo-yo effect has accompanied people trying to lose weight for decades. Those who start diets and abandon them again frequently gain more pounds than before – so goes the widespread assumption. A team led by Faidon Magdos and Norbert Stefan from the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sport at the University of Copenhagen has now compiled and evaluated the available data in the July issue of the journal "The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology." The result calls the prevailing perception into question.
