Researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute have announced that they have designed, using a generative artificial intelligence model, whole viruses capable of replicating, while warning against possible misuse of this work.

According to the study, the AI model was given in each trial a conserved fragment of the ΦX174 bacteriophage genome and had to reconstruct the missing parts, «ähnlich wie ein Sprachmodell einen angefangenen Satz vervollständigt», in the manner of a language model completing an unfinished sentence. The researchers thus produced several complete viral genomes, some of which were synthesized in the laboratory and proved functional: introduced into bacteria, they replicated successfully.
