Researchers at the University of Graz and ESA are preparing observations during upcoming solar eclipses to investigate coronal mass ejections from the Sun and their potential effects on Earth in greater detail.

Solar Eclipse as a Measurement Window

Coronal mass ejections are at the center of a new research initiative that uses upcoming solar eclipses as natural measurement opportunities. As reported by the Austrian Press Agency, teams from the University of Graz, ESA, and other international institutions are participating. The goal is to capture processes in the solar corona during the brief phase of totality more precisely than before.

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon covers the bright solar disk and makes the star's outer atmosphere visible for a short time with the naked eye and with instruments. Precisely in this phase, the researchers say, structures and movements in the corona can be observed that are overwhelmed by normal daylight. The data obtained will feed into models that make the behavior of the Sun more predictable.
