In view of falling water levels in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, it is becoming apparent that hotel ships between Budenheim and St. Goar will no longer be able to operate in the coming one to two weeks.
Background: Shipping on the Middle Rhine
The ongoing midsummer drought is causing water levels on the Rhine in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate to fall. As the Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsamt Rhein (WSA) in Bingen told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the current forecasts for water levels in the Hessian section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley indicate that the situation could become particularly tight for cabin ships. The responsible employee Florian Krekel said there would come a point from which the hotel ships can no longer operate. He also pointed out that hotel ships are less flexible than cargo ships: „Ein paar Koffer weniger bringen ja nichts“.
