Rider of an unlicensed e-scooter hits woman on sidewalk and flees

According to the current state of the investigation, the woman crashed herself in the track area of the street during the escape. Police officers subsequently secured the vehicle. The rider was reported.

Vehicle significantly exceeds permitted limits

The injured pedestrian received emergency medical treatment and was taken to a hospital. Further information on the severity of the injuries was not initially released.

According to police, the seized vehicle is not an ordinary rental device but a model that significantly exceeds the legal requirements for use in public spaces. In Austria, e-scooters with a maximum rated continuous output of 600 watts and a design speed of no more than 25 km/h are permitted.

The vehicle in question significantly exceeds these limits. The drive delivers 700 watts, and the achievable top speed of 70 km/h is nearly three times the permitted figure. Such devices legally fall into a different category and require, for example, registration as a small moped.

Investigations and report filed

Police are now investigating, among other things, on suspicion of negligent bodily harm in road traffic and the use of an unapproved vehicle. A report was filed against the rider, according to a statement from the authority.

At the time of the report, there was no indication of a driver's license being held. Whether the rider was authorized to operate the vehicle is the subject of the ongoing investigation.

Heiligenstädter Straße runs between Döbling and the 19th district along the Wien River and is one of Vienna's most heavily traveled arterial roads. Pedestrians in the area of the intersections and crossings are particularly at risk there when vehicles are traveling at excessive speeds.

Safety debate around high-powered e-scooters

Beyond the immediate injuries, the case has raised fundamental questions about the safety of high-powered e-scooters. Observers note that the inspection and seizure of unapproved models remains difficult, as such devices are increasingly available through private sales.
