Rockfall at Biarritz cliff claims one life among divers

Eyewitness Vincent Pariset, 45, said he was at the beach with his daughter, stand-up paddleboarding, when the rockfall occurred. Speaking to media, he described the impact as tremendous. „Es war ohrenbetäubend“, said Pariset. He also stated: „Wir hatten wirklich Angst, als wir gesehen haben, wie ein ganzer Abschnitt der Steilküste einstürzte.“

When the mass of rock struck the water's surface, eyewitnesses reported a massive water plume. The beach near the accident site was densely crowded at the time of the incident; temperatures were reported to be above 40 degrees Celsius.

Reactions and closures

Following the rockfall, the city administration of Biarritz closed off the area around the accident site to divers and vessels. The nearby beach was temporarily shut. Search operations for the missing third person continued on Thursday morning.

Rockfalls are not a new phenomenon along the Biarritz cliff coast. There had already been severe collapses along that stretch of coast in 2008 and 2018.
