Roger Schmidt to lead Red Bull clubs worldwide on the sporting side

By pooling sporting responsibility, Red Bull aims to better align playing philosophy, squad planning and youth development across all locations. The group thereby owns one of the largest networks of professional football clubs worldwide.

The move comes at a time when Red Bull is strategically further developing its clubs in Europe, North and South America, as well as in Japan. Collaboration between the sites — for instance in scouting, training methodology and transfers — is to be professionalized under the new structure.

Schmidt had previously coached several European clubs during his managerial career, including Red Bull Salzburg. Stints such as his Champions League campaign with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven or his time in Lisbon had made him known internationally. He now moves into a position away from the day-to-day life of coaching.

Schmidt's career path

Observers see the personnel decision as a signal of stronger centralization within the Red Bull network. The sporting leadership could in future set more uniform guidelines on squad budgets, playing systems and development pathways than has previously been the case.

It initially remained unclear how far-reaching Schmidt's powers of intervention at individual clubs will be. In particular, the question of whether he can decide directly on coaching changes, transfers or sporting crises depends, according to industry insiders, on the respective contractual construction.

At the same time, the appointment raises questions about the self-image of the independent clubs. Local identities, fan scenes and traditional structures could come into conflict with more globally oriented management.

Reactions and open questions

For Red Bull Salzburg, Schmidt's appointment also marks the return of a familiar coach to a central role within the group. The Austrian club has been the sporting flagship of the network in recent years and has repeatedly developed players on to bigger European clubs.

In Leipzig, meanwhile, the previous sporting director Marcel Schäfer had given the club a new sporting direction after recent turbulent phases featuring coaching changes and sporting setbacks. A superordinate role for Schmidt could complement this work.

Internationally, the Red Bull model is regarded as one of the most advanced multi-club systems in professional football. Conglomerates such as the City Football Group pursue a comparable approach with similar structures.

No information was initially released on the timing of the official presentation or on the exact length of the contract. The group also declined to comment on possible personnel changes in the coaching staffs of the affected clubs.

The coming weeks are likely to show how quickly Schmidt grows into his new role operationally and what initial measures he initiates at the individual clubs.
