According to sources in administrative circles, the city of Rome is planning the definitive end of the traditional horse-drawn carriages, of which only 16 rigs are still in operation, and is seeking sponsors for the drivers' switch to taxi licenses.
The horse-drawn carriages, known as "Botticelle," have been part of the image of the Italian capital for generations. But their number has dropped dramatically in recent years. According to sources in administrative circles, only 16 rigs are still in operation. The city of Rome now apparently wants to ban this remaining stock completely from city traffic.
Patrizia Prestipino, Rome's animal welfare commissioner, also announced tougher checks if the carriage drivers do not agree to an end. Prestipino stated: "If they do not agree, we will place a police patrol behind every carriage to monitor possible violations." Restrictions during high temperatures already apply in Rome.
