German security authorities have identified Russian disinformation operations online ahead of the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which are part of a campaign named "Operation Matryoshka."
According to security circles, AI-generated videos are being disseminated as part of the campaign, targeting voters in eastern Germany. The content is said to be intended to turn sentiment against democratic institutions and to undermine trust in the electoral process. According to the findings, distribution takes place via social networks and messenger services, although the reach of individual posts remains limited.
