Odesa, 23 August 2026
A Russian drone hit the locomotive of a passenger train in Ukraine's Odesa region, leading to the evacuation of 573 passengers, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service (DSNS).
The State Emergency Service said on 23 August 2026 that 573 passengers had been evacuated from a passenger train in the Odesa region whose locomotive was struck by a Russian drone. The service reported on its official channels that the operation involved 19 buses supplied by the DSNS and local services.
The attack illustrates the persistent danger faced by civilian rail traffic in southern Ukraine, a region that has been repeatedly targeted by long-range drone and missile strikes since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. Railways have been a frequent vector of attack because of their role in both civilian transport and military logistics.
