Russian rocket strikes on Kyiv – at least 20 dead in wave of attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned on Friday of a new massive Russian rocket attack within 48 hours. That warning was confirmed by the overnight strikes. Zelensky spoke of a deliberate strategy of targeting civilian sites and the country's energy infrastructure.

According to Zelensky, the Russian military has used nearly 1,700 drones, more than 1,630 glide bombs, and 95 rockets and cruise missiles this week. More than half of the rockets were ballistic missiles, which are particularly difficult to intercept. The figures could not be independently verified.

According to the authorities, the strikes hit several districts of Kyiv. Rescue workers were in continuous operation after the impacts, and residents were directed into shelters. Images from the affected neighborhoods show burned-out vehicles, damaged residential buildings, and destroyed utility lines.

International observers assess the intensity of the attacks as a new level of escalation. The Ukrainian government once again called on its Western partner states to step up air defense and accelerate the delivery of interceptor systems. Zelensky announced diplomatic talks with European capitals.

In Russia, the leadership initially made no comment on the accusations. The Russian leadership had in the past consistently portrayed attacks on Ukrainian cities as a response to Ukrainian actions. No independent confirmation of the mutual strikes from the Russian side was initially available.

The Ukrainian air defense published a preliminary toll in the morning: According to it, numerous drones and several cruise missiles were intercepted, while some rockets reached their targets. The authorities warned the population of possible follow-up strikes in the coming hours and urged people not to leave shelters.

International criticism and assessment of the situation

Human rights activists and aid organizations criticized the attacks on civilian targets as a violation of international law. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights announced a review of the incidents. Meanwhile, evacuations were underway in the hardest-hit neighborhoods of Kyiv.

Energy providers reported temporary outages in several districts. Technicians worked to provisionally repair damaged lines. Hospitals in Kyiv maintained emergency operations while the supply of blood reserves and emergency medications was kept going.

Zelensky addressed the population in a video message and expressed his condolences to the relatives of the killed. He announced state assistance for the families of the victims and called on citizens to remain vigilant. The situation remains serious, the president warned, and follow-up strikes cannot be ruled out.
