Founded in 2018, Sabah FK prevailed in the decisive qualifying match on Tuesday, thereby securing its place in the league phase of the premier competition. The club from the capital Baku is thus the first representative of Azerbaijan in the new Champions League phase. According to consistent media reports, the match was in the balance until late, before Sabah managed the leap into the European elite.

Sabah FK had already attracted attention in the previous qualifying rounds. In the playoff duels that precede entry into the league phase, the Azerbaijanis prevailed in several encounters. Among others, they faced Hapoel Be'er Sheva, a club from Israel, against whom they were mentioned multiple times in the reports. A comparison with NEC Nijmegen from the Netherlands also appears in the coverage and is one of the stations on Sabah's international journey.
