The Dutch third-placed league finishers NEC Nijmegen have defeated Olympiacos Piraeus 2:1 after extra time in a home match of the Champions League qualifying competition, knocking them out of the competition in the process.

NEC Nijmegen secured an important victory in the Champions League qualifying on Tuesday evening at their home stadium. Against the Greek top club Olympiacos Piraeus, the team prevailed 2:1 after 120 minutes. Regular time had produced no winner, meaning extra time had to decide the outcome.

In the lead-up to the match, the situation was clear: NEC Nijmegen had entered the qualifying as third-placed finishers of the Dutch league and faced a traditional Greek club that had participated in European competitions on multiple occasions in the past. The hosts went into the encounter as underdogs but delivered a focused performance throughout.
