Salzburg, May 4, 2026 Salzburg Central Station Closed After Chemical Leak

On Monday afternoon, Salzburg Central Station was completely closed following the leakage of the hazardous chemical sodium methoxide from a freight car. Firefighters began recovering the residue while the station was evacuated as a precaution.

Hazardous Chemical Triggers Large-Scale Emergency Response

The leaked substance was sodium methoxide, a white-yellowish, odorless powder used as a catalyst in biodiesel production. The chemical is corrosive, self-igniting, and reacts violently with water or moisture. Werner Kloiber, commander of the Salzburg professional fire department, explained the dangers: *"The substrate is dissolved in methanol inside the tank. In crystalline form, it adheres to the exterior of the wagon. This is dangerous because it is corrosive and self-igniting, and it reacts violently and toxically when it comes into contact with water or moisture."*
