Salzburg, 06 July 2026

In a Europe-wide count, a total of 910 people affected by homelessness or housing exclusion were recorded in Salzburg on the reference date in October 2024, including 40 accompanied children.

Figures from the Salzburg count

According to the city's own statements, Salzburg participated for the first time in the so-called European Homelessness Count, which was coordinated by the Belgian university KU Leuven and conducted in 35 EU cities. The aim of the survey is to make homelessness data comparable and to inform political strategies. In addition to Salzburg, Innsbruck and Vienna also took part in the count.

Of the 910 people counted, 323 – more than one third – slept on the street or in emergency shelters. Another 129 lived in transitional housing, 60 in public facilities, and 40 in insecure housing situations such as dilapidated buildings, often without electricity or water connections. The largest group, with 341 people, stayed temporarily with family, friends, or acquaintances – for instance, on a sofa – a phenomenon experts refer to as hidden homelessness.
