Tight Window After the Season Ends

At the heart of the work is the excavation of the Mönchsberg. There, caverns are being created – cavities blasted or milled into the rock – which are to serve as new functional, technical and lounge areas beneath the festival theaters. This comes with extensive logistical challenges, including the removal of excavated material and the monitoring of vibrations affecting the historic buildings.

The festival leadership described the project as a central step to secure the infrastructure of the festival theaters in the long term and to adapt it to contemporary requirements, such as fire protection, stage technology and audience management. At the same time, the architectural appearance of the listed buildings is to be preserved.

Impact on Residents and Festival Guests

With the start of construction, part of the operations around the festival theaters will shift. Residents will have to prepare for truck traffic, barriers and altered pathways in the area of the Mönchsberg. The city of Salzburg and the festival have announced that they will inform the public at regular intervals about the progress of the construction.

Throughout the entire project period, a TV live stream will accompany the construction site and make the progress of the cavern work visible to those interested. The format is intended to provide insights into a part of the project that is otherwise not accessible to the public and to document, over the coming years, how the Festspielbezirk 2030 is being built piece by piece.

The project is officially being launched within Salzburg's municipal and cultural context as a major construction site of national significance. The completion of the expansion is planned for the 2030 festival year, when Salzburg is once again planning a special edition of the season. Until then, several construction phases with various interventions in the existing structures and the rock will be carried out.

The financing of the festival renovation is borne by the public sector and handled through several funding bodies. Representatives of the festival had emphasized in the past that the investment is necessary to ensure that operations can continue at an international level in the coming decades and to keep the location competitive.

For festival guests, the construction phase means that parts of the area around the buildings will appear altered. Sightlines to the Mönchsberg and paths along the Felsenreitschule may be temporarily restricted. The festival has pledged to keep access to events open as much as possible throughout the entire construction period.

Geological and Heritage Conservation Supervision

With regard to the historic character of the Mönchsberg and the festival theaters, the interventions in the rock will be accompanied by geological and heritage conservation experts. Monitoring programs for vibration measurement and rock stability checks are part of the construction concept, in order to identify and limit risks to existing buildings and the surrounding area at an early stage.

The imminent start of the cavern work marks the transition from a long phase of planning and preparation into the visible implementation. Salzburg is preparing for the Mönchsberg to become not only a cultural but also a construction focal point of the city in the coming years – with deep interventions into the mountain that will change the foundation of the festival.
