Salzburg, 20 August 2026

Following the end of the Salzburg Festival, the actual construction work for the renovation, modernization and expansion of the festival theaters will begin in early September, involving the excavation of caverns beneath the Mönchsberg.

The project, titled "Festspielbezirk 2030," envisages the renovation of the existing venues – including the Haus für Mozart and the Felsenreitschule – and their expansion with additional spaces. After years of planning, the construction phase is now beginning, with the excavation of the caverns in the Mönchsberg starting immediately after the end of this year's festival summer.

According to those responsible for the project, construction work is set to begin in early September. This tight schedule is closely tied to the festival calendar: during the ongoing season, construction measures at the venues are not possible, which is why the window between the end of the season and the preparation of the next season's operations is particularly tight.
