In parts of Salzburg's city centre, a driving ban for cars with out-of-town licence plates has been in force since Wednesday, intended to exclude day-trippers from car traffic in the old town during the summer months.

According to the city, the regulation covers several streets around the Staatsbrücke, the Imbergstraße, and adjacent areas considered central access routes to the old town. Prohibition signs indicate the ban, and according to the city, controls are carried out using the licence plates of entering vehicles, among other methods. The aim is to significantly reduce the daily burden of tourist car traffic and improve the quality of life for residents.

Mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ) had already announced the measure in May, drawing on the "zona a traffico limitato" used in Italian cities. He justified the step with a drastic formulation: "Wir haben in der Vergangenheit die Touristen de facto bis in unser Wohnzimmer fahren lassen. Ich kenne das aus keiner anderen Stadt." According to the city's calculations, the ban is expected to reduce the number of car trips in the affected zones by around 1,000 per day.
