Brenner Motorway Blockade Ends Without Feared Traffic Chaos

The closure fell during the Pentecost school holidays of several German federal states, a period that normally sees some of the heaviest travel of the year. Authorities on both sides of the border had braced for massive disruptions, with the German Foreign Office warning in advance of expected traffic jams on alternative routes lasting into Sunday.

Yet the feared chaos never came. Alexander Holzedl from motorway operator Asfinag said it remained 'extremely quiet' and there were no obstructions on alternative routes. A spokesperson for the ÖAMTC traffic club told dpa: 'Wir sind begeistert' regarding the situation on the main routes through Austria.

A Surprisingly Quiet Day

On the Italian side, the traffic situation was also described by authorities as 'extremely quiet.' Katia Grenga from the Bolzano traffic police said: 'Offenbar haben die frühzeitigen Informationen ihre Wirkung gezeigt.'

According to Asfinag, normally more than 30,000 vehicles pass the toll stations on the Brenner motorway during the closure period. In 2025, nearly 11 million cars and around 2.5 million trucks used the toll-required Brenner Autobahn, according to the operator.

The demonstrators' demands include expanded noise protection and shifting heavy goods traffic to rail. Some signs criticized the delayed planning of the rail feeder line in Bavaria, which is meant to relieve the motorway after completion of the Brenner Base Tunnel.

Karl Mühlsteiger told the crowd: 'So kann es einfach nicht mehr weitergehen.' He added: 'Wir kollabieren mittlerweile unter den extremen Abgasen.' The mayor also declared: 'Das geht heute in die Geschichte Tirols ein.'

Demands and Political Reactions

Tyrol's governor Anton Mattle attended the demonstration as a private person. He had previously forwarded the demonstrators' demands to Vienna, Berlin, Rome, and Brussels, and called for a corridor toll, an intelligent traffic management system, and shifting traffic to rail as an international solution.

The Brenner route and all side roads were closed to transit traffic from the morning due to the protest. The closure for trucks began at 9:00 and for cars at 11:00. The demonstration was scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM and last until 4:30 PM.

According to the Austrian mobility association VCÖ, more than 2.4 million trucks drove over the Brenner motorway in the previous year. Since 2010, truck traffic on the route has increased by around 40 percent. Around 15,000 residents of the Wipptal are particularly affected, many living in immediate proximity to the motorway and federal road.

The Human and Economic Toll

Café operator Zsuzsanna Kornyik, 48, who has been running establishments on the Brenner pass summit for 20 years, said: 'Es ist sehr angenehm. Sonst muss ich oft lange warten, bis ich die Gäste auf der anderen Straßenseite bedienen kann.' Hundreds of cyclists rode the 1,370-meter-high Brenner Pass without car traffic during the protest.

The Brenner Base Tunnel, currently under construction, is scheduled to begin operation in 2032. The roughly 64-kilometer tube will allow passenger and freight trains to travel at speeds of 200 km/h, reducing the journey from Innsbruck to Franzensfeste from 80 minutes to just 25 minutes.

Looking Ahead

ÖAMTC expects heavy traffic on Sunday because holidaymakers who postponed their trips will eventually travel. Karl Mühlsteiger announced that the population will not rest even after this day of action.

Italy has filed a lawsuit before the European Court of Justice seeking to weaken Tyrol's anti-transit measures such as night and weekend truck driving bans and dosing systems. The Fernpass in Tyrol will be closed on June 27 from 10:00 to 12:00 due to demonstrations, coinciding with the start of school holidays in Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland.

Police and emergency services in Bavaria and Austria had prepared for possible traffic chaos. The Red Cross increased its presence with additional emergency vehicles and a motorcycle unit. Exit bans for through traffic were imposed on the A10 in Salzburg.
