Matrei am Brenner, 31 May 2026
Around 5,000 demonstrators gathered on the Brenner motorway near Matrei am Brenner on Saturday afternoon, completely blocking Europe's busiest Alpine transit route for eight hours to protest against noise, pollution and the relentless growth of heavy goods traffic.

The protest, which ran from 11:00 to 19:00 on the Austrian side and until 20:00 on the Italian side, was initiated by Karl Mühlsteiger, the non-partisan mayor of Gries am Brenner. The demonstration had been rejected twice by the district authority before the Tyrol Regional Administrative Court overturned the ban, ruling that prohibiting a demonstration against high traffic volume by citing high traffic volume would render freedom of assembly absurd.
