Samsung Electronics union members voted on Tuesday to accept a management offer for record annual bonuses, averting a planned 18-day general strike at the world's largest memory chip maker.

Samsung Electronics’ unionized workforce voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to accept a compromise bonus proposal, putting an end to plans for an 18-day general strike that would have been the largest in the company’s history. More than 70 percent of union members backed the management offer, according to union officials.

The company-wide agreement includes an average wage increase of 6.2 percent and a profit-sharing arrangement that will distribute 10.5 percent of the company’s annual operating profit to employees. The deal is set to take effect immediately, covering all unionized workers at South Korea’s largest conglomerate.
