Seoul, 20 May 2026

Samsung Electronics workers in South Korea launched an 18-day strike on Thursday after talks with management over bonus payouts failed.

The strike involves approximately 48,000 employees, representing about 38% of Samsung's workforce in South Korea. The workers are demanding the abolition of bonus caps, a 7% increase in base salaries, and a guaranteed 15% share of annual operating profits as bonuses.

Samsung reported a profit of 33 billion euros in the first quarter of 2026, an eightfold increase from the previous year. Despite this, management rejected a mediation proposal from the National Labour Relations Commission, leading to the strike.

The union has cited SK Hynix's agreement to allocate 10% of profits to bonuses as a precedent. 'The labour union will lawfully commence a general strike tomorrow as scheduled,' said union leader Choi Seung-ho.
