Isabel Schnabel, a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank, said the Frankfurt-based institution must continue raising benchmark interest rates to keep inflationary pressures under control.
In a recent interview, Isabel Schnabel argued that the ECB has not yet concluded the rate-hike cycle launched to counter inflation in the euro area. The Executive Board member justified her position with the persistence of upside risks to prices, linked in particular to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
According to Bloomberg, Schnabel warned of the danger of indirect and second-round effects on the economy if aggregate demand remained resilient. "Je länger der Konflikt andauert, desto höher sind das Risiko und die Intensität von indirekten und Zweitrundeneffekten, insbesondere wenn die Gesamtnachfrage widerstandsfähig bleibt", she said, warning that the longer the conflict drags on, the greater the risk of spillover effects on price lists.
