The film studio Universal Pictures has signed the American screenwriter Liz Meriwether as the writer for the planned biopic about pop singer Britney Spears, as trade publications "Variety" and "Hollywood Reporter" reported on Tuesday.

Meriwether, known as the creator and showrunner of the comedy series "New Girl," is taking on the role of screenwriter for the film project, which is based on Spears' memoirs. She has worked on the award-winning series "Dying for Sex" and "The Dropout," among others.
