Rumors of an alliance with Dornauer

Parallel to the speculation about a return, rumors circulated about a possible electoral alliance with former Tyrolean SPÖ chief Georg Dornauer. Dornauer had told the "Tiroler Tageszeitung": "Wir sind im Austausch und führen natürlich politische Gespräche." This statement further fueled the debate, although Kurz himself denied any connection to concrete political plans.

Dornauer has long been considered one of the more colorful figures in Tyrolean state politics and regularly attracts attention with striking appearances. His name has been mentioned repeatedly in recent weeks in the context of a possible new alliance outside the existing party structures. Kurz, on the other hand, emphasized that the People's Party was "seine politische Heimat", thereby making clear an institutional bond with the ÖVP.

Kurz as an entrepreneur: The company Dream

Kurz resigned as chancellor at the height of his power in 2021 and withdrew from active politics. Since then, he has been involved in building the company "Dream", which operates in the fields of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. After an earlier funding round of 260 million US dollars, the company was most recently valued at around three billion US dollars. According to his own statements, Kurz holds 15 percent of the shares; current business figures classify him as a half-billionaire.

Although Kurz has described the ÖVP as his political home, his relationship with the current party leadership is considered distant. This is likely also why rumors of a switch or a cross-party alliance persisted so stubbornly. In Viennese government circles, it was said that Kurz's statement had been noted, but that further possible developments were also being watched.

Reactions from domestic politics

It is striking that Kurz formulated his rejection of politics from New York of all places – that is, from the environment in which international tech networks and venture capital play a central role. The move fits the picture of an increasing shift of his activities toward the Anglo-Saxon business world, away from Viennese domestic politics.

Political observers see the renewed clarification as an attempt to calm the debate. Whether the rejection is permanent remained open in Vienna. References to contact with "ehemaligen politischen Weggefährten, besonders in der Volkspartei, aber auch außerhalb" left at least room for interpretation.

The episode also illustrates how strongly Kurz continues to shape Austria's domestic political debate five years after his resignation. FPÖ chief Herbert Kickl, for example, repeatedly used the speculation to put rhetorical pressure on the ÖVP. Within the People's Party itself, there is now apparently hope for a calming of the situation.

What is certain: Kurz is expected to be in the USA in the coming weeks. When and in what form he will publicly comment on Austrian politics again remained initially open.
