The Senegalese Football Association has relieved national coach Pape Thiaw of his duties following the disappointing performance at the World Cup in Norway. According to L'Equipe, Patrick Vieira is the preferred candidate to succeed him.
The separation from Thiaw comes after a mixed sporting phase for the Senegalese national team. At the recent World Cup in Norway, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Belgium despite holding a 2-0 lead. The 2-3 defeat ended hopes of another coup following the triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Background: Ban and World Cup exit
In addition to the early World Cup exit, the upcoming ban against the coach is also likely to have played a role. Thiaw would have had to begin a five-match ban in September at the start of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as he had instigated a protest by his team in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations against Morocco in January. The final had been won 1-0, but the match was subsequently awarded 3-0 to Morocco due to the protest action.
The Senegalese association is now looking for a successor who can lead the team through the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. According to the French daily L'Equipe, the focus is on a prominent name: Patrick Vieira, a Frenchman born in Dakar, is said to be among the favorites for the coaching position.
