Senegalese midfielder Pape Gueye announced immediately after the World Cup exit against Belgium (2:3 after extra time) in an Instagram Story that he is taking a break from the national team as long as the current coaching staff remains in office.

Gueye, who is under contract at FC Villarreal and has a market value of 40 million euros — making him, together with another player, the second most valuable asset in Senegal's squad after Iliman Ndiaye (55 million euros) — responded with his public statement to his substitution in the decisive match. "I was in good physical shape, but ultimately the coach makes the decisions. We respect that," the 27-year-old wrote. The sporting justification was followed by the political part of his message.
