Senior Union Chief Hüppe: Younger people should start working earlier

Hüppe, who leads the Senior Union as a CDU-affiliated retirees' organization, also placed his position in a context with the officeholder in the Chancellery. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, described in the article as a 70-year-old, belongs in Hüppe's view to the same age group. "Der Kanzler gehört zu unserer Altersgruppe. Und was heißt schon Oldie? Aber klar: Er ist unser Mann." At the same time, the senior representative rejected a reductive personalization of the debate. It was "um die Koalition, nicht um den Kanzler allein."

Digitalization in Austria as a model

In substance, Hüppe stressed that securing the social systems could not be achieved through less work, but only through more work. "Es wird nicht durch weniger, sondern nur durch mehr Arbeit gehen. Das ist richtig. Das heißt für mich aber nicht unbedingt am Ende des Erwerbslebens, sondern am Anfang." With this emphasis, the senior chief deliberately shifts the lever to career entry at the beginning rather than the end of working life, even though he is fundamentally open to raising the retirement age.

In parallel to Hüppe's initiative, the ÖVP politician and former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel pointed on Deutschlandfunk to the digitalization of the pension insurance system in his home country. Schüssel described how a pension decision is now issued there within ten minutes. "Dort erhalte man einen Pensionsbescheid in zehn Minuten, früher seien es sechs Monate gewesen." In Austria, according to the information, civil servants and the self-employed are also included in the statutory pension insurance.

Pension Commission to present proposals by end of June

The background to the debate is the Pension Commission appointed by the federal government, which is to present proposals by the end of June 2026 for the long-term stabilization and reform of the German pension system. In this phase, demands such as Hüppe's are meeting with a broad political and societal discussion about the affordability of the statutory pension in light of demographic change. The Senior Union is among the associations that explicitly call for young people to enter working life earlier.

Hüppe also used the interview with the Rheinische Post to emphasize the role of older voters. Seniors are the backbone of democracy, "wenn man sieht, wer noch die demokratische Mitte wählt." With this reasoning, he staked out a shaping claim for his age group in the reform debate, going beyond the question of his own retirement entry. This is embedded in the ongoing discourse, in which both an increase in the retirement age and reforms at the beginning of working life are being considered.

What the Pension Commission's proposals will ultimately look like remains open. By the deadline at the end of June 2026, the different accents – digitalization along Austrian lines, earlier labor force participation, and a possible further increase in the retirement age – could flow into the final report. What is clear is that Hüppe, with his remarks, is increasing the pressure on the coalition to make adjustments both at the beginning and at the end of working life.

What is remarkable here is the personalization through age: with the allusion to the "70-year-old oldie" in the Chancellery, the senior chief demonstratively links the reform debate to a symbolic figure of generational politics. In doing so, he shifts the focus from a pure discussion about limits of burden-sharing to a debate about the contribution that younger people should in future make earlier – a point that is likely to play a central role in the upcoming deliberations of the Pension Commission.
