He called for more staff for the prison service quickly, as it had reached its limits of capacity. "If we are short on people from the start, the system cannot be maintained," he warned.

One specific figure underscores the criticism: According to Graf, the authorized positions at JA Stein are only filled to 84 percent. This gap has a direct impact on the safety of staff and inmates. "The overcrowding in the prisons and the overburdening of staff are a dangerous mix," Graf stated.

Reactions from Politics

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Strafvollzug (Austrian Ombudsman Board), Gabriela Schwarz (ÖVP), also expressed herself as "shaken, but not surprised." She regretted that there had been injuries. At the same time, she pointed out that the holiday season further exacerbates the already strained staffing situation: "Especially now in the summer, when the already tense staffing situation is compounded by the holiday season, it is to be feared that such incidents will repeat themselves," said Schwarz to the APA.

The Parliamentary Commissioner demanded that every lever be set in motion to increase staffing levels. Without sufficient prison guard and specialist personnel, the situation will not improve for all involved. "If you save the system to death, it will be carried out on the backs of the female and male officers who perform their duty every day," Graf had emphasized previously.
