As of June 1, 2026, Austrian correctional facilities are operating at 108.34 percent capacity, according to figures from the Ministry of Justice that Ombudsman Gabriela Schwarz (ÖVP) has had evaluated.

A total of 9,124 people were incarcerated in Austrian detention centers at the beginning of the month, while the stated capacity was only 8,422 places. This resulted in a utilization rate of 108.34 percent, following a similarly high rate of 108.15 percent on February 1, 2026, with 9,012 inmates and 8,333 designated places at that time. The official capacity was adjusted upwards by 89 places within four months, without any structural additions.
