In Lesachtal, in Carinthia and East Tyrol, six griffon vultures have been found dead since April 16, 2026, and one other was rescued; according to Birdlife Austria, examinations revealed poisoning with the nerve agent Carbofuran, which is banned throughout the EU.
The dead birds were discovered in the municipalities of Untertilliach in Tyrol and St. Lorenzen in Carinthia. As Birdlife Austria reported on Wednesday, an additional griffon vulture was found alive, cared for at the Burg Landskron rescue center, and subsequently released. The high number of affected animals in a small area made a natural death unlikely as a cause, leading to the involvement of the Carinthian State Criminal Police Office.
