Seven malaria cases linked to Frankfurt Airport; one death reported

The cluster was first identified through routine surveillance by local health authorities in Hesse. Investigators are working to determine how the mosquitoes reached the airport area and how the affected individuals came into contact with them.

Airport operator Fraport said it is cooperating fully with the public health investigation. The company did not provide details on specific measures being taken at the airport but confirmed that it has been in contact with the RKI and Hessian authorities.

What is airport malaria?

The RKI described airport malaria as "sehr selten" (very rare) in Germany. Unlike typical malaria, which is usually contracted during travel to tropical regions, airport malaria occurs when a mosquito that has fed on an infected person in an endemic area survives a long flight and then bites someone near the airport or in its vicinity.

Health officials are advising people living or working near Frankfurt Airport to take precautions. "Schutz vor Mückenstichen und die Einnahme von vorbeugenden Medikamenten können die Erkrankung verhindern," the RKI said, urging the use of insect repellent, long clothing, and prophylactic medication where appropriate.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites and is typically spread through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. Symptoms include fever, chills, sweats, headache, and muscle pain. Without prompt treatment, the disease can become severe and, in some forms, fatal.

Investigation and response

Germany normally records only isolated imported malaria cases, almost all linked to travelers returning from sub-Saharan Africa or other endemic regions. A domestic cluster of this size, occurring without recent travel history among those affected, is unusual and has drawn the attention of epidemiologists across Europe.

The RKI said it is analysing the genetic profile of the parasites involved to confirm the source of the infections. Results are expected in the coming days and will help determine whether a single imported mosquito or multiple insects are responsible.

Hessian state health authorities have begun tracing contacts of the infected individuals to identify any further cases. They are also reviewing whether additional mosquito control measures are needed in the area surrounding the airport.

Broader context

The case comes at a time of heightened attention to vector-borne diseases in Europe, partly driven by warmer temperatures that have expanded the range of certain mosquito species. Public health experts say that while broader transmission of malaria in Germany remains unlikely, isolated airport-linked cases are a known risk and require vigilance.

Fraport has not reported any operational disruption at Frankfurt Airport. Travelers have been advised to follow standard precautions, including the use of insect repellent, particularly during the warmer months when mosquito activity is highest.
