Frankfurt am Main, 15 September 2026

At Frankfurt am Main Airport, two new malaria cases have become known, for which the responsible authorities are examining a possible connection to the airport grounds.

Frankfurt Airport has once again come into the focus of public health protection: According to the Frankfurt am Main City Health Office, two people have tested positive for malaria. Both of those affected had, according to current knowledge, spent time in the vicinity of the airport before symptoms appeared. The Frankfurt district of Schwanheim, where two of the previous cases had been recorded, is once again coming into view.

The authorities are investigating whether this is so-called airport malaria. This refers to infections that are not acquired through travel to an endemic area, but are presumably transmitted by tropical mosquitoes that reach Central Europe via air freight or through the galleys of international aircraft. The responsible authorities in Frankfurt am Main have so far not published a conclusive explanation of how the current infections occurred.
