At least 70 people have died in Nepal and India due to severe storms, authorities reported on Sunday.

The violent storms hit several regions in Nepal and India with full force. In the mountain areas of the Himalayas, landslides and flash floods caused devastating damage. Particularly affected was the region around the Himlung Himal as well as the Makalu district, where entire villages were buried by mudslides.

Situation in the Himalayan Regions

In Kathmandu and other Nepali cities, additional people lost their lives to flooding. Rescue workers continued searching for missing persons on Sunday. The exact death toll could rise further, as remote areas are sometimes difficult to reach.

The situation is particularly dramatic at Mount Everest, where hikers and climbers were caught off guard by the volatile weather. Several expeditions had to be aborted. Authorities warned of further landslides and unstable slopes.
