Catherine Hofbauer, a single mother of a seven-year-old boy with a severe heart defect, has around two hours of care routines to manage on an average morning in Vienna and relies on respite services, which are only available to a limited extent in Austria.
Hofbauer lives in Vienna and cares for her son alone, who suffers from a very severe heart defect that would entail a complex multiple disability. "Ihr Sohn habe einen sehr schweren Herzfehler, was eine komplexe Mehrfachbehinderung mit sich bringen würde", she reports on the diagnosis. On a normal day, "haben wir an die zwei Stunden Pflegeroutine in der Früh", the mother describes everyday life.
To be able to attend appointments at all or get some rest, she takes her son twice a month to the Viennese day hospice "ZeitRaum" run by the children's palliative care team MOMO. "Es wird auch darauf eingegangen, was ich gerade brauche", says Hofbauer about the psychosocial support she receives there. The mother describes the place as "ein sehr freundlicher Ort. Man fühlt sich gut aufgehoben."
