Siege of Kusra in the West Bank: Palestinian Family Waits Ten Days for Access

On Sunday, a team from the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, delivered supplies to the family, including water, food, medicine, hygiene products, and learning and play materials for the children. This was the first time international aid had reached the house in days. A spokesperson for the organization said it was concerned about the children’s well-being.

One of the family members is also an American citizen. According to relatives, the family also has relatives in the United States who have contacted the US government. It was initially unclear whether the US government had responded.

Israeli Army Statement

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the specific allegations from Kusra. In a statement, it said only that it was conducting “security operations” in the West Bank and examining the allegations. Israel Katz did not directly mention the civilian population in his statement.

Kusra is located in the Nablus district, an area where the Israeli military has repeatedly carried out raids and arrests in recent months. Residents accuse the army of also blocking families not involved in the operations and subjecting them to pressure.

International Reactions

International aid organizations are increasingly concerned about the situation. In addition to UNICEF, local groups are also trying to maintain the delivery of aid supplies. In earlier reports, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) pointed to the difficult supply situation in several villages in the West Bank.

The German government in Berlin and other European states have not yet publicly commented on the incidents in Kusra. Diplomats have spoken only on background, referring to ongoing discussions with Israeli authorities. No official statement was initially released.

The Abu Rida family says it hopes the siege will be lifted soon. Relatives reported that the food supplies would last only a few days. The family gratefully accepted the aid delivery from UNICEF but is waiting to be able to leave the village or at least receive medical assistance.

In his statement, Israel Katz also emphasized that the army would continue to act against “Palestinian terrorism.” Observers see this as a signal that operations in the West Bank could continue in the coming days.
